The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) is a regulation by which the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission intend to strengthen and unify data protection for all individuals within the European Union (EU). The General Data Protection Regulation will apply on May 25, 2018. Regulators are publishing guidance on a range of compliance points which businesses may be dealing with for the first time, which are particularly complex, or which simply need a bit of further explanation. Businesses have less than a year to make sure the data is GDPR-ready.
